How IMAX 70mm Works, Best Movie and TV App, The Rest is History

Welcome to Top 5 Tech, my weekly show about what to watch, listen to, download, read, and something deep every week.

On what to watch, The Odyssey is coming next week and the 70mm IMAX is the big story.

It's the first movie ever filmed completely on IMAX, there's a lot of challenges to that, but

Adam Savage has an awesome video on what it takes to project 70mm film in the theater.

So if you're fortunate where you can actually go to one that's showing the 70mm print of The Odyssey,

or you just want to see a cool video about how this is all done,

you should definitely check out Adam's video.

And as a bonus pick, I discovered that video

because of this Instagram account, Deepister.tech.

She actually features a bunch of cool videos,

stuff that's outside of my little bubble of tech,

and so it's helping me discover new videos,

new channels, new things to watch and listen to,

so I highly recommend that follow on Instagram.

On what to listen to, on a recommendation

from Mike Hurley on MacPowerUsers,

I finally listened to "The Rest is History,"

and he recommended listening to the JFK series.

Now "The Rest is History" has a ton of episodes,

and they basically have little mini-series across the podcast,

so it'll say part one of six,

and the JFK series is six parts.

I listened to the entire thing.

It was extremely compelling.

You can actually do a free trial of their member program,

so if you want to get the ad free,

and then you get kind of bonus packages

of these different series,

you can do that seven-day trial and then listen to it,

but my goodness, this was really fascinating.

If you just listen to one episode,

the "Death in Dallas" episode,

which is part three of the JFK series,

it's a bit harrowing, given the topic,

The storytelling is excellent, I really appreciate it.

Appreciate and enjoy the banter between the co-hosts.

If you're into history, this is an awesome podcast.

I want to read this week.

I wanted to highlight someone I met at CES,

a listener to primary technology.

This is Derek Seaman's tech blog

and he had a top Mac OS app picks for 2026.

It's a great article.

He talks about apps that I've actually never heard of.

Some you probably have, but it's a great breakdown.

You should check it out.

We'll put that link so you can read it down

in the show notes.

I want to download.

Many people were bemoaning the loss of TV time,

which was a TV tracking service and.

that's actually shutting down and so a bunch of apps started putting TV time

import into their app this way people can move to it and my favorite right now

for tracking movies and TV shows is sequel I've mentioned it in YouTube

videos before but it is a beautiful app I use the widget on my home screen so I

can see what movies are coming out soon and they just updated so you can have TV

time import so you can bring over your TV time and also syncs with tracked you

You can import your letterbox and actually met the developer at WWDC.

at the live talk show, which is super fun.

It's a beautiful app, highly recommend.

You can mark movies and TV shows that you want to watch.

You can rate things that you have watched, create collections.

And it does more than just movies and TV series.

It actually does video games, books and a ton more available on all the platforms.

It is free to track and create some collections.

And then sequel plus is $3 a month or $20 a year for some of those other features.

But I pay for it because it's great.

And finally, for something deep, it's also a bonus download pick.

I've been trying to get better at sleep.

And if you wear an Apple watch to track your sleep, you know,

you get a sleep score every morning and that score seems to vary widely.

And it over indexes on the time you go to bed.

So if you go to bed after midnight, but even if you sleep late,

it'll give you a super low sleep score.

So I wanted a second opinion on some of my health stats.

And that's where this app comes in.

This is a completely free app.

No in-app purchases at all. No subscriptions.

It's called Trackables.

It's actually made by former Apple employees.

It's really nicely designed.

you give it access to your Apple health data.

And then you get just kind of a second opinion on stuff.

So you get a different sleep score

than you'll get in the Apple health app,

which might be more reflective of how you feel.

You can see heart rate information at a glance,

your resting heart rate averages for the day,

and also distance movement and your activity rings

all in a really nice app.

I really like the sleep score plus the chart

that's at the bottom of that sleep score page.

It only has 11 ratings right now,

so it's not being discovered very much,

but I highly recommend, again, completely free,

no in-app purchases, looks great.

and you can have a little better idea of your health stats.

That's this week's top five tech. If you could,

I'd appreciate a five star rating and review in Apple podcasts,

help the show be discovered by more viewers and listeners.

And you can watch this podcast, of course, in Apple or Spotify.

But if you want to get it as a newsletter,

you can scan this QR code or subscribe for free below.

And you'll get the links that I talk about every Friday,

plus a little extra commentary in that newsletter.

Every Friday at 7:00 AM it gets delivered.

Then you get easy access to do all the things, the watch, listens,

downloads and more. Thanks so much for

watching and listening. I'll catch you next week.
