Antarctica's Secrets, I Am Not a Robot, Do You Hate AI?
Welcome to Top 5 Tech, my weekly show sharing something to watch, listen to, read, download,
and something deep every week.
This week you have got to watch Cleo Abrams' video about Antarctica.
It's on her huge IfTrue YouTube channel and it is basically a mini-documentary.
I don't even know if it's mini, I mean, she went to Antarctica personally, she talked
about ice cores and drilling them, and the lakes under Antarctica that scientists have
actually gotten to study and whether or not they have found life.
I won't spoil that part, but you've got to see it.
It's an incredible video.
Next up to listen to, this is Tech Adjacent, and I did listen to the audio-only version,
but if you also want to watch it, this is on YouTube, but Jonah Hill was a special guest
on a live, smartless podcast, and I know there's a lot of celebrity podcasts out there and
they vary in how good they are, but I really enjoyed Jonah Hill's interview.
He feels very authentic, genuine, you know, he did a lot of movies, big movies like Wolf
of Wall Street and Moneyball, seemed to have gotten burned out and then started a family,
got back into writing, and as I hear him on this podcast, it really feels like he genuinely
loves what he's doing right now.
Just hearing someone talk passionately about something they love doing, that they would
do it no matter what, however much they're getting paid for it, it was really enjoyable.
So that's the Jonah Hill interview on the smartless podcast.
I want to read this week, there's only one thing you should be paying attention to, and
that's the new book by Joanna Stern, I Am Not a Robot.
It's actually out, you can get it, mine was delivered earlier this week.
I've already started reading it and I'm already hooked.
You can also listen to the audio book, it's also read by Joanna Stern, teaser, we might
get her as a special guest on a podcast pretty soon, so I'm excited for that.
Just reading the introduction and first chapter, it's already incredible.
I've also been watching her YouTube videos, so I am not a robot.
And I mentioned her a couple weeks ago as well, so I will shout out one other book.
Not necessarily tech-related, but my wife and I have been reading The Body Keeps the Score.
We're on the very last chapter.
It is a heavy book, both heavy in terms of the content, lots of studies, psychology,
and also some of the stories that are told in it.
But learning about trauma and the brain and how it affects the body, it has been a pretty wild book.
heard Merlin Mann talk about this book and mention it on several of his podcasts.
I want to download this week, well of course it's Jason Aytens at my co-host on Primary
Technology, Contextly is now out on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, syncs your notes across all the
devices, it is free to use, write your notes, use Markdown, connect your events, attach
those notes to events, all that is completely free.
Then if you want to try some of that audio recording, transcribing, and Apple intelligence
features, you could pay the $5 a month or $40 a year.
I'm doing these downloads because I just did a video on some Mac apps that you've probably
never heard of.
I'm really enjoying a new app called Gnome for the Mac.
This is a fast GIF search, you can use a keyboard shortcut, bring up the search, quickly put
a GIF on your clipboard, it's a $7 one-time purchase.
Really been loving the Gnome app.
And also if you're looking for a completely, completely free app, Swim the Dive Swimmer
House is an incredible developer.
He makes the apps like Actions for shortcuts, and Short Cutie, Supercharge, Today, he makes
so many incredible apps, and today is one of his free ones.
And he has lots of free ones, but if you just want to see the events for today on your calendars
You can choose what calendars show up. It's a little menu bar icon
You just click it shows your events quickly
You can also program a keyboard shortcut just to toggle it on and off very quickly
But that app is completely completely free and finally for something deep. We talked about it on today's primary technology
I record this on Thursdays, and this was a clip from the University of Central Florida
Commencement address and apparently was a guest speaker speaking and she mentioned AI and how it's the new industrial revolution
posted this video on blue sky and he said with quote when you're inside the bubble you think everybody else is but everybody isn't and
This clip just it kind of blew my mind
I did not think that hundreds of college graduates would be booing at a commencement address when it comes to AI
the rise of artificial intelligence is
the next industrial revolution
I
Struck a chord
Now I have kids they're in high school and younger and their relationship with AI is maybe looking up using it for research asking it questions
Sometimes it can just be funny, but I don't feel like they have the harsh reaction to it
Like these college graduates do but I also see a lot of memes on Instagram and tick-tock of people saying
Managers and employers love AI and want their employees to use it because they think that raises productivity
And all the employees can't stand it and feels like it's getting shoved down their stroke and they feel like it's getting shoved down their
Throat, so I'm really curious if you're younger generation Gen Z or younger and you're listening or watching this podcast
I really want to know how you feel about AI in relation to your day-to-day use and also what it means for your work and
Employment opportunities in the future. Is it scary? Is it frustrating?
Are you more annoyed that some managers gonna ask you to use AI and maybe requirement just in your daily work?
Even if you don't need to I would love to
I'm gonna leave an email address down in the show notes along with all the links to everything
I talked about in today's episode.
And you can also get these episodes as a newsletter that are delivered every Friday.
Get those links in an easy email, you can watch, listen, download and all the things.
And if you haven't yet, I'd appreciate a five star rating and review in Apple Podcasts if
you're watching and listening there or in Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
Thanks for tuning in.
We'll catch you next week for Top 5 Tech.
